Disease and
Disorders Project Guidelines
The
nervous and endocrine systems create systemic changes by utilizing a complex
network of nerves and an array of hormones. The hormones are delivered to
effectors, so the human body can elicit physiological changes. These
physiological changes can ultimately create physical changes and potentially
disease (Remember "Form Follows Function?"). This course project will
challenge you to develop your understanding of homeostasis and the influence of
the nervous system and endocrine hormones on the human body. In addition to the
neuroendocrine connection, you will be given another system from A&P I or
II and a common disease/disorder/pathology associated with that system. You
will be assigned the system and given a list of disorders to select from in
order to create your project.
Your project will include the following:
1. A brief
introduction describing the neuroendocrine connection and your assigned system,
as well as the disease you will be discussing.
2. A
discussion regarding the general considerations of the condition in terms of
structure and dysfunction.
3. A
description of clinical findings, including signs, symptoms, and diagnostic
procedures/results.
4. A
detailed analysis of the effects or influence of the neuroendocrine structures
and hormones that are linked to the disease
5. A brief
discussion of the standard medical approaches to treatment and treatment
options. (Examples may include surgery, medications, lifestyle modifications,
complementary or alternative medicine (CAM) Therapies, etc.
6. A
conclusion summarizing why it is important to understand how the neuroendocrine
connection affects homeostasis, negative feedback mechanisms, and how disease
manifests.
Research: A minimum of three (3) references must be cited.
At least two (2) of your sources must be published works from the last five
years and may include: textbooks, journal articles, periodicals, medical
encyclopedias, or dictionaries. A limit
of two (2) websites is allowed as references (Wikipedia or its variations
cannot be used as references). Articles and texts should contain accurate
information that can be confirmed through referenced sources. Ideas should be
clearly expressed in complete sentences, and should have a logical progression.
Plagiarism is not acceptable.
Form: Your project is to be submitted on your own blog spot.
You will create a post that contains your report. You will attach, copy and paste, or
link ONE of the following: a 4-6 page Word document, an 8-12 slide PowerPoint
presentation, a Publisher pamphlet or brochure, or an eight to twelve minute
YouTube video.
*PowerPoint presentations should include title and reference
slides, and are not counted towards the 8-12 slide minimum requirement.
*Publisher brochures should be tri-fold and double-sided.
*YouTube videos can be a maximum of fifteen minutes. Your
video can be audio of you discussing your report with a slideshow of different
images.
*If you do a brochure or video, you must also attach your
references in a Word document.
Your final project is due at the end of Week 9 (See chart
below.) At the end of Week 5, you must submit a 250 word rough draft or
explanation of what your final project will be. The rough draft is worth 20% of
the overall final project grade, so it is important that you complete and
submit the rough draft.
